Minatogawa Stateside Town isn't trying to be a destination restaurant, which is exactly why it's worth the detour.

In the 1960s the American administration built housing for its personnel in Urasoe: single-storey concrete boxes with flat roofs, carports and grassy plots, laid out on a grid — a piece of suburban America dropped onto a hillside above Naha. The military left, the houses stayed, and from around 2000 they were taken over one by one by bakeries, coffee roasters, homeware shops and small restaurants.

The result is a district of about fifty of these concrete bungalows, painted in pastels, with the original louvred windows and carports intact, occupied by some of the better independent businesses on the island. It is a genuinely odd piece of architectural history being used well rather than preserved. Parking is metered, it is twenty minutes from the airport, and it is where people from Naha go on a Sunday.

Getting there in detail

Minatogawa, Urasoe. By car from Naha Airport, north on Route 58; by bus, the Minatogawa stop is about a short walk. Four coin car parks within the district provide about 55 spaces in total, charging around ¥100 per from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and ¥100 per hour overnight, with a 12-hour maximum of around ¥700. Individual shops keep their own hours and rest days.

What locals order

**Every shop sets its own hours.** There is no district-wide schedule and a good number close on weekdays. Checking two or three specific places before going is worth the effort. **Park in the coin lots.** Four of them inside the district, around 55 spaces total, roughly ¥100 per half hour in the daytime. Street parking is not available. **Look at the buildings.** Flat roofs, jalousie windows, carports, concrete — 1960s American military housing, essentially unmodified. The shops have painted them rather than rebuilt them. **It is a Sunday district.** Busiest and liveliest at weekends, which is also when parking is hardest. A weekday morning is calmer but with fewer shops open. **Twenty minutes from the airport.** Which makes it a good first or last stop rather than a detour — a genuinely different Okinawa from the resort coast.
