For serious hikers, the full gorge trek from Sandankyo entrance to Oku-Sandankyo (16km one-way, 5–7 hours) offers wilderness immersion but requires stamina and proper gear (boots, water, snacks). Most visitors choose the middle option: hiking to Sandanfall waterfall (5km round-trip, 3 hours), which balances effort and scenic reward. **Boat ferry experience:** Small wooden ferries (capacity 4–6 passengers) operated by local boatmen cross deep pools at Kurobuchi and other points. Ferries operate April–November (weather permitting), roughly 9:00–16:00. The crossing itself is part of the experience — gliding across mirror-still emerald water with sheer rock walls rising on both sides.
