**Ferry choice:** Two ferry services operate to Miyajima — JR West Ferry (JR Pass valid, free with pass) and Matsudai Kisen Ferry (JR Pass not valid, ¥180). JR Ferry's route passes closer to Itsukushima Shrine's torii gate, offering superior photo opportunities from the boat — sit on the right side (starboard) during outbound journey for torii views. Return ferry: sit on the left side. Matsudai Ferry is slightly faster but misses the torii approach.
