Nagano's geography does a lot of the work at Nozawa Onsen — the rest is knowing when to show up.

Nozawa Onsen (野沢温泉) is a 700-year-old hot spring village that doubles as one of Japan's premier ski resorts. The village is built around 13 free public bathhouses (外湯, sotoyu) fed by natural hot springs reaching 90°C at the source. Each bathhouse has distinct character and water temperature, and locals still use them for daily bathing. The village's narrow cobblestone streets, traditional wooden ryokan, and steaming vents create an atmospheric Edo-period townscape.

In winter, Nozawa transforms into a major ski destination — Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort offers 50+ runs, 1,085m vertical drop, and powder snow from Siberian weather systems. The village's unique appeal is the combination: ski all day, then soak in outdoor hot springs while snow falls. Non-skiers visit year-round for onsen culture and nozawana (pickled mustard greens, a local specialty).

**Bathhouse etiquette:** The 13 sotoyu are maintained by village residents; tourists are guests. Rules: shoes off at entrance, wash thoroughly before entering bath, no tattoos (some bathhouses stricter than others), quiet voices. Ogama bathhouse (大湯) is the largest and most tourist-friendly; Shin-yu (新湯) is smaller and locals-only atmosphere. **Onsen Meguri (bathhouse tour):** Collect stamps from all 13 bathhouses for a commemorative towel (available at tourist office, ¥1,500). Completing the tour takes 1–2 days. Each bathhouse has different mineral content and temperature (40–45°C).麻釜 (Asagama) is a natural boiling spring where locals cook onsen tamago (hot spring eggs). **Ski season insider tips:** January–February offers deepest snow and best powder. The Yamabiko slope area (upper mountain) gets less crowded than base runs. Night skiing available weekends (16:00–20:00).
