Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park rewards patience — the view most people describe isn't the one you get by rushing.

Jigokudani Yaen-koen (地獄谷野猿公苑, 'Hell Valley Wild Monkey Park') is the only place in the world where wild Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) bathe in natural hot spring pools. The monkeys descend from the surrounding forests to soak in the geothermal waters during winter, their red faces and snow-covered fur creating surreal, almost meditative scenes. The park is located in a steep forested valley fed by hot springs (jigokudani means 'Hell Valley' due to the steaming vents).

The monkeys are completely wild — they come and go freely, though they've grown accustomed to human observers. Winter (December–March) offers the iconic snow-bathing scenes, but the monkeys visit year-round. Photographers worldwide consider this one of the planet's best wildlife experiences. The park maintains a naturalistic hot spring pool exclusively for the monkeys; feeding or touching is strictly prohibited.

Getting there in detail

Yamanouchi Town, a bus from Nagano Station to Kanbayashi Onsen Stop, then a short walk (uphill forest trail, can be icy in winter). Park entry: ¥800. Year-round access, but winter is peak monkey activity.

Beyond the guidebook

**Winter timing:** January–February offers deepest snow and most dramatic bathing scenes. Arrive at park opening (9:00am) for best light and fewer crowds. Mid-morning (10:00–11:00) is when the largest monkey groups gather in the pool. Afternoon light is harsher and monkeys often leave by 15:00. **Photography tips:** Bring a telephoto lens (70-200mm minimum); you can get within 2–3 meters but wide lenses miss facial expressions. Overcast days create soft, even lighting better than harsh sun. The steam rising from the hot spring adds atmosphere but can obscure shots — patience required. **Summer visit:** Monkeys still appear May–October but spend less time in the water (they bathe mainly to cool down in summer heat). Baby monkeys (born April–June) are most active in summer — different experience than winter but equally rewarding. Fewer tourists in summer. **Combine with onsen:** Kanbayashi Onsen village (at the trailhead) has several ryokan with excellent hot springs. Staying overnight allows dawn visits before crowds. Korakukan Ryokan (蔵久館, traditional ryokan with outdoor rotenburo, ¥15,000–25,000 per night with dinner) is recommended.
