Bessho Onsen — Kamakura of Shinano

**Anrakuji Octagonal Pagoda:** This is the only existing octagonal three-story pagoda in Japan (designated National Treasure). The Zen temple sits on a forested hillside; the 15-minute uphill walk through moss-covered stone steps and cedar forest creates a sense of pilgrimage. Visit early morning (8:00–9:00) for solitude. **Public bathhouse rotation:** Locals use different bathhouses on different days to vary mineral exposure. Ishiyu is the hottest (44°C), Ohyu is largest and most spacious, Daishiyu is smallest and most traditional (wooden walls blackened by decades of steam). Try all three for ¥500 total. **Soba nod:** Bessho is in Ueda, famous for Shinano soba (buckwheat noodles). Kuboyama Soba (久保山そば) near Kitamuki Kannon serves wild vegetable tempura soba (¥1,200) using 100% local buckwheat. The texture is coarser and more rustic than refined Tokyo soba — this is country soba at its best. **Off-season advantage:** Bessho is quiet year-round but especially November (autumn foliage at temples) and February (plum blossoms at Kitamuki Kannon). Weekdays see almost no tourists — you may have entire bathhouses to yourself.
