Before Miyazaki Jingu became a stop on any list, it was — and still is — a working place of worship in Miyazaki.

Miyazaki Jingu is one of Kyushu's most important shrines, dedicated to Emperor Jimmu — Japan's legendary first emperor who supposedly began his eastern conquest from this region. The shrine complex is set in a dense forest of ancient cedar and camphor trees, with the main hall built in Shinmei-zukuri style (simple, unpainted wood architecture emphasizing natural materials).

The shrine grounds cover 28 hectares, with multiple secondary shrines scattered through the forest connected by gravel paths.

Visiting etiquette & tips

**Forest exploration:** Most visitors only see the main hall. The forest behind contains several auxiliary shrines worth exploring — follow gravel paths deeper into the woods (15-minute circuit). The giant trees (some over 1,000 years old) create cathedral-like canopy. Early morning (7:00–9:00) offers cool shade and bird songs, with virtually no crowds. **Museum highlights:** The adjacent Miyazaki Prefectural Museum of Nature and History (separate from shrine) displays archaeology from ancient Himuka Province (old name for Miyazaki region). The exhibit connects Emperor Jimmu legend to actual Yayoi-period artifacts found locally. Entry ¥300, worth 30-minute visit for history context. **Annual festival:** April 3 is the Grand Spring Festival (春大祭) featuring mounted archery (yabusame) — archers on galloping horses shoot targets while at full speed. The event draws 10,000+ spectators. The archery runs 13:00–15:00 on the shrine's riding ground.
