Yonaha Maehama Beach — 7km White Sand Crescent

Yonaha Maehama Beach stretches 7 kilometers along Miyakojima's southwest coast — consistently ranked among Japan's top 3 beaches for its powdery white coral sand, gradient turquoise water, and lack of development (no high-rises, just low-lying hotels behind the tree line). The beach slopes so gradually that you can walk 50 meters offshore and still stand waist-deep.

The water clarity is exceptional (20+ meter visibility is common), making it ideal for snorkeling despite being a beach rather than a reef site. Sea turtles occasionally swim near the shore, particularly in early morning.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Avoiding crowds:** The beach is massive, but 90% of visitors cluster near the main parking area (central section). Walk 500 meters north or south along the beach to find near-solitude even in peak summer. The southern end (toward Kurima Bridge) is particularly quiet and offers the same water quality. **Snorkeling spots:** Despite being a beach (not a reef), snorkeling is excellent 30–50 meters offshore where coral patches and tropical fish concentrate. Look for darker patches in the water (visible from shore) indicating coral. Sea turtles occasionally feed on seagrass beds 100 meters offshore in the southern section — early morning (7:00–9:00) sees most turtle activity. **Sunset viewing:** The beach faces west, making it Miyakojima's premier sunset spot. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset (check seasonal times) to watch the sun sink directly into the East China Sea. The 'Miyako Blue' water turns orange-gold as the sun descends — peak Instagram moment.
