Wakayama has no shortage of temples and shrines, but Kamikura Shrine is the one worth setting aside real time for.

Kamikura is where, in the Kumano tradition, the gods first came down to earth — before Hayatama, before Hongu, before any of the shrines. The object of worship is Gotobiki-iwa, an enormous boulder on the hillside above Shingu that is said to resemble a toad, and the shrine is a small hall tucked under it.

Getting there is 538 stone steps, laid by tradition at Minamoto no Yoritomo's expense, and they are genuinely steep — closer to a staircase up a rock face than a shrine approach, with a chain handrail. From the top the city and the Kumano sea open out below. On the night of 6 February about two thousand men in white, carrying torches, run down these steps in the Oto Matsuri, which is called the fire waterfall and is exactly as alarming as it sounds.

Getting there in detail

Shingu. About a short walk from JR Shingu Station. Free to visit. The approach is 538 steep stone steps with a chain handrail — trainers or walking shoes are strongly recommended and the climb is not suitable in wet weather. The Oto Matsuri fire festival is held on the night of 6 February. Part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range World Heritage listing.

What locals know

**The first section is the hard part.** The lower steps are the steepest and most uneven — large irregular blocks rather than cut treads. It eases higher up. **Not in the rain.** Wet stone at that gradient is genuinely dangerous. There is a gentler alternative path for part of the way; ask at the bottom. **Go up for the view as much as the rock.** The panorama over Shingu and the Kumano sea from the top is the best in the city. **6 February is the Oto Matsuri.** Two thousand men in white with torches running down these steps at night. Participation is restricted; watching is not. **It predates the three grand shrines.** Kamikura is the descent point in the Kumano origin story, which makes it the oldest thing in the system despite being the smallest.
