Hisui Coast rewards patience — the view most people describe isn't the one you get by rushing.

Jade forms in the Kotaki river valley over the prefectural border in Niigata, washes down to the sea, and the current carries it west along this shore. The result is four kilometres of gravel beach at Miyazaki and Sakai in Asahi where you can, with patience and some luck, pick up raw jadeite off the ground. People do — this is a recognised and entirely legal thing to spend an afternoon on, and the local visitor centre employs someone who will tell you whether what you found is jade or not.

The identification rules are specific: whitish, angular rather than rounded, sparkling crystal faces, noticeably heavy for its size, and smooth to the touch. The best time is about three days after rough seas, when the swell has turned the beach over and put new stones on it. The beach is a hundred metres wide, which is unusual for a gravel shore in Japan, and the Northern Alps come down to the water at the eastern end.

Miyazaki and Sakai, Asahi, Shimoniikawa District. Immediately by Etchu-Miyazaki Station on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway; by the Asahimachi Express bus from Kurobe-Unazuki-Onsen Shinkansen station; by car from Asahi IC. Free, with a free car park for around 50 cars. The Hisui Terrace visitor centre nearby has showers, rental bicycles and a guide who will identify stones you have found.

Beyond the guidebook

**Three days after a storm.** Rough seas turn the beach over and bring new material up. A calm week means everyone before you has already worked the same surface. **Search the wet zone.** Stones at the waterline are wet, and wet is when jade's crystal faces catch the light. Dry gravel higher up the beach hides everything. **Five tests: white, angular, sparkling, heavy, smooth.** Jadeite is dense, so weight for size is the most reliable single check in the field. Nephrite and quartz will fool you on colour. **Get it checked at Hisui Terrace.** The visitor centre has a guide who identifies finds. This is the difference between coming home with a jade pebble and coming home with a pebble. **It is by a station, which is rare.** Etchu-Miyazaki is on the Ainokaze line and the beach is immediately outside it — one of very few places in Japan where a rock-hunting site is walkable from a platform.
