A visit to Asahi Funakawa Riverbank is easy to underplan — bring more time, and less certainty about what you'll find, than you'd expect.

For about ten days in early April, a stretch of riverbank in the small town of Asahi produces one of the most improbable views in Japan. Two hundred and eighty cherry trees line 1,200 metres of both banks of the Funakawa. Underneath them, local farmers plant tulips and rape flower so that the timing coincides. Behind all of it, close enough to fill the sky, stand the still-snowbound peaks of Asahidake and Shirouma.

The local name for the combination is the spring quartet: cherry, tulip, rape blossom, snow mountains. It is entirely deliberate — the flowers under the trees are grown for this — and it works because the Northern Alps come down almost to the sea here, so a snow wall sits behind a spring meadow. The window is short, it shifts with the blossom, and from 2026 the parking is by advance booking. Outside those two weeks it is a river with trees along it.

Getting there in detail

Funakawashin, Asahi, Shimoniikawa District. Car recommended. The event usually runs for around two weeks in early to mid April — in 2026, 3–16 April. Free to visit. From 2026 event parking is by advance reservation, with tickets sold through the town in the weeks beforehand; outside the event period the P4 riverbank car park is used.

Beyond the guidebook

**Book parking before you book anything else.** From 2026 the event car parks are reservation-only, with bus and taxi tickets released in January and private car tickets in mid-March. Turning up without one during the event is not a plan. **The window is roughly ten days and it moves.** Blossom here comes three to five days after the Toyama city forecast. Watch the town's own bloom updates rather than a general cherry forecast. **The mountains are the difference.** Cherry avenues exist everywhere in Japan; a snow-covered 2,900-metre ridge directly behind one does not. Clear mornings are when the peaks are out and cloud has not built. **Look for where the four layers line up.** The composition only works from certain points along the 1,200 metres, where tulips, rape flower, blossom and mountains stack. Walk the bank before settling on a spot. **Outside the event, use the P4 lot.** The riverbank car park is available before and after the event period, when the same walk costs nothing and has nobody on it.
