Himeji Castle (姫路城) is Japan's finest surviving feudal castle, nicknamed 'White Heron Castle' (白鷺城) for its brilliant white exterior and graceful silhouette. The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Treasure, representing the pinnacle of Japanese castle architecture.

The castle's defensive design showcases samurai military engineering: confusing maze-like paths, hidden gates, murder holes in walls for dropping stones on attackers, and steep wooden stairs. The six-story main keep provides panoramic views of Himeji City. The surrounding cherry trees (1,000+ trees) create spectacular hanami in early April.

The keep's narrow stairs and low ceilings create bottlenecks — early entry ensures smooth flow. Post-keep, explore the west bailey and gardens when afternoon crowds concentrate on the main keep. **Architectural highlights:** The castle uses ingenious defensive design: the approach path to the keep loops back on itself multiple times (confusing attackers), gates have right-angle turns preventing battering ram use, and arrow/gun slits are strategically placed in white walls. The white plaster walls (fireproofing) and elaborate gables demonstrate both function and aesthetics. **Cherry blossom vs summer:** Hanami season (late March–early April) sees 100,000+ daily visitors — the castle grounds become overwhelmingly crowded but visually stunning.
