Harashimaya Sohonke is the kind of Gunma food stop that locals recommend before any restaurant with a sign in English.

Yakimanju is the food Gunma people miss when they move away, and almost no guidebook aimed at foreign visitors mentions it. Four plain steamed buns — no filling, no sweetness, just wheat dough — go onto a bamboo skewer, get painted with a thick dark miso glaze built from red miso and coarse zarame sugar, and are turned over heat until the glaze blackens at the edges and the buns puff. The result is smoky, salty, faintly caramelised, and nothing like the dessert that the word 'manju' usually promises.

The operation is deliberately small: a low counter, a charcoal grill, a handful of tables, and one product. Skewers are sold to eat there while still hot, and the shop closes when the day's dough runs out, which on weekends can happen well before the posted closing time.

**Eat it on the spot.** The glaze is at its best in the first two or three minutes off the grill, while the surface is still tacky and the inside is steaming. Takeaway skewers cool fast and the buns go dense. There are only a few seats, so on a busy weekend expect to stand. **How to order.** One skewer is four buns and ¥240, which is a light snack rather than a meal — most locals order two. There is no menu to work through and no English, but pointing and holding up fingers is entirely normal here. A 25-piece boxed set (¥1,700) exists for taking home, though it is meant to be re-grilled rather than eaten cold. **Combine it with the walk in.** Heiwacho is a residential grid of low houses and small shops about a short walk from Maebashi Station, and the walk is the most ordinary, least touristed stretch of city you will see in Gunma. If you would rather not walk it twice, take a taxi out and walk back. **Sold-out risk is real.** The shop makes a fixed quantity each morning. Arriving after 3:00 PM on a Saturday or Sunday is a gamble; before noon on a weekday is close to guaranteed.
