Happo Pond looks different depending on the season, the weather, and the time of day — none of which a single photo can tell you.

Happo Pond (八方池) is a small alpine pond at 2,060 meters elevation on the Happo-one ski resort's summer hiking trail, famous for its mirror-like reflections of the surrounding 2,900m peaks (Shirouma-dake, Kashimayari-dake). The pond is fed by snowmelt and surrounded by alpine wildflowers in summer. The reflection on calm mornings creates one of Japan's most photographed mountain scenes.

Reaching Happo Pond requires a gondola ride followed by a 90-minute uphill hike through alpine meadows and wooden boardwalks. The trail is accessible to moderate hikers and families (no technical climbing). The pond sits in a natural amphitheater of peaks, creating a dramatic alpine cirque setting. This is one of the Northern Japanese Alps' most accessible high-elevation destinations, offering alpine scenery without multi-day trekking.

Hakuba Village, Happo-one ski resort. Access: Gondola + 2 chairlifts to trailhead (¥3,200 round-trip, operates late June–October). Hiking: 90-min ascent, 60-min descent. Total visit: 4–5 hours including pond time. Bring water, snacks, layers, and hiking boots. No facilities at the pond.

Local knowledge

**Reflection photography:** The pond's reflection requires calm water — best conditions are early morning (7:00–9:00) before wind picks up. Take the first gondola (8:00) to reach the pond by 9:30. Afternoon wind ripples the water, destroying reflections. Overcast days create soft, even light; sunny days create dramatic but high-contrast scenes. **Trail strategy:** The ascent gains 350m over 2.5km. The trail is well-maintained with wooden steps and boardwalks, but it's continuously uphill. Take breaks at the two viewpoint platforms (halfway and 3/4 up) for mountain panoramas. The final approach to the pond is through a boulder field — watch footing. **Wildflower season:** Late July–early August is peak wildflower time — alpine meadows burst with purple, yellow, and white blooms (hakusan-ichinomoto, chinguruma, miyama-kinpoge). The contrast of colorful flowers against snow-capped peaks is stunning. Bring a macro lens for flower close-ups. **Extended hiking:** Experienced hikers can continue past Happo Pond to Karamatsu-dake summit (唐松岳, 2,696m, additional 2 hours one-way). This extends the hike to 7–8 hours round-trip but rewards with 360° summit views. Mountain hut available (Karamatsu Sanso, ¥10,000 per night with meals, book ahead).
