Goryokaku Star Fort — Sakura Viewing Tower

Goryokaku (五稜郭) is a star-shaped fortress built in 1866, Japan's first Western-style citadel designed with artillery defense in mind. The five-pointed star layout (inspired by European forts) features moats, earthen ramparts, and strategic angles to defend against naval attack. The fort's brief military history ended in 1869 during the Boshin War when pro-shogunate forces made their last stand here before surrendering to the Meiji government.

Today, the fort is a park with cherry trees lining the star-shaped moat. In spring (late April-early May), 1,600 cherry trees bloom, and the star shape becomes a pink outline visible from the adjacent Goryokaku Tower (107m observation deck). The view from above — a perfect five-pointed star of pink blossoms — is one of Japan's most unique sakura compositions.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Sakura timing:** Cherry blossoms bloom late April to early May (peak dates vary annually by ±5 days). Check Hakodate Tourism's bloom forecast in mid-April. Peak bloom lasts 5-7 days. The tower view is essential for appreciating the star shape — ground-level views don't reveal the geometry. Arrive early morning (8:00) or late afternoon (16:00-17:00) for softer light and smaller crowds. **Tower vs. ground:** Goryokaku Tower (¥900) offers the iconic aerial view and historical exhibits on two floors. The observatory is 90 meters high with 360° views including Mt. Hakodate and Tsugaru Strait. Ground-level park walking (free) allows strolling beneath cherry trees and along the moat — both perspectives are worth experiencing. Budget 2 hours for tower + park walk. **Historical exhibits:** The tower's exhibit floors display Goryokaku's military history, the Boshin War's final battle, and Hakodate's role in Meiji Restoration. English signage is available. The fort's Magistrate's Office (箱館奉行所, ¥500, inside the park) is a reconstructed administrative building from 1864, with period rooms and exhibits. **Off-season appeal:** Cherry season is glorious but crowded. Winter (December-February) offers a different beauty — the star shape is visible in snow cover, and the park is nearly empty. The tower hosts winter illumination events (December-February, evenings) when the fort is lit with colored lights.
