Getting the most out of Hotokegaura is less about the destination than about timing the light right.

Two kilometres of white volcanic tuff on the western shore of the Shimokita peninsula, eroded by wind and sea into towers, blades and hollows up to a hundred metres high, standing in a row along a beach with no road behind them. The rocks were given Buddhist names centuries ago — the names are why the place is called the shore of the Buddha — and it is a designated national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument.

Getting there is deliberate. A boat from Sai port takes you along the coast and lands on the beach; the alternative is driving to a car park on the cliff top and walking down twenty minutes of steep steps, then back up them. Either way you arrive somewhere with no buildings, no shops and no phone signal, at the far end of a peninsula that most people never visit at all.

Getting there in detail

Chogo, Sai, Shimokita District. By boat, the sightseeing cruise from Sai port runs from mid-April to late October with a last departure around 1:40 PM and a round trip fare of about ¥2,400. By car, roughly 1 hour from JR Shimokita Station to the cliff-top car park, which has around 100 free spaces, then a 20-minute descent on steep steps — around 40 minutes for the round trip on foot. By bus, take the Shimokita Kotsu service from Shimokita Station toward the Sai depot, about 2 hours 15 minutes.

Beyond the guidebook

**Boat or steps, and they are different visits.** The cruise from Sai shows you the cliffs from the water, which is the only way to see the full two-kilometre run, and lands you on the beach. The cliff-top car park route is free and available outside the boat season but gives no seaward view. **Those steps are steep.** Twenty minutes down and rather longer back up, on a path that is not for anyone with mobility or knee problems. There is nothing at the bottom but the beach. **Boats run mid-April to late October only.** Last departure is early afternoon. Outside that window it is the steps or nothing. **Nothing there, at all.** No shop, no vending machine, no reliable signal. Bring water, and fill the tank before you start down the peninsula. **Combine with Osorezan.** Mt. Osore, the volcanic afterlife landscape with its own temple, is on the same peninsula, and the two together are what a trip to Shimokita is for.
