Ashizuri Cape is the southernmost point of Shikoku, a granite headland wrapped in subtropical vegetation and surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean. The coastline is rugged, with 80-meter cliffs dropping straight into deep blue water. The cape is home to Kongofuku-ji, the 38th temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, and the Ashizuri Lighthouse, built in 1914 and still operational. The area is a national park, known for its unique microclimate — warmer and wetter than the rest of Kochi, supporting plants like the giant-leafed hamayu lily and twisted ashitaba shrubs.

The cape has a reputation for natural drama. Sunrise here is spectacular, with the sun emerging directly from the ocean. The coastal trail connecting the lighthouse to the temple passes viewpoints over sheer cliffs where waves explode against the rocks far below. This is one of those rare places where you can feel the edge of the country — the next landfall south is the Philippines.

Opening Hours

Cape area and cliff trail: open 24 hours. Ashizuri Lighthouse: viewable from exterior anytime (not open for climbing). Kongofuku-ji Temple (38th pilgrimage stop): open daily from dawn to dusk (no strict closing time).

Closed: Cape and temple always accessible. Diving center typically closed November–April (rough seas).

Entrance Fee

Cape area, temple grounds, and lighthouse exterior viewing all free. Scuba diving ¥12,000 for 2 guided dives. Ashizuri Thermae onsen resort: day-use from ¥1,200.

Best Season

Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) for clear Pacific views and moderate temperatures. June–October for diving (warm Kuroshio Current, tropical fish). Winter brings powerful wave action against the cliffs.

Ashizuri Skyline Walk (lighthouse to temple): 2 hours. Full cape visit including lighthouse climb, trail, and temple: 3–4 hours. Day dive trip with cape exploration: full day.

Ashizuri Cape is 2.5 hours by bus from Kochi (Tosaden Kotsu to Tosashimizu, transfer to local bus). Limited bus service; rental car strongly recommended. Free access to cape area. Lighthouse: viewing only, not open for climbing. Kongofuku-ji Temple: free entry.

**Walking the cape:** The 'Ashizuri Skyline Walk' is a 2km clifftop trail from the lighthouse to Kongofuku-ji. The trail is well-maintained but exposed — strong winds are common. The best viewpoint is Tengu-no-Hana (Tengu's Nose), a rock outcrop halfway along the trail. Sunrise (6:00–7:00 depending on season) from here is legendary. **Lighthouse:** The Ashizuri Lighthouse, built in 1914, is an automated, unmanned lighthouse and is not open to the public for climbing — it is viewed from the exterior and surrounding trail only. The white tower against the cliffs is a popular photo subject. **Kongofuku-ji Temple:** This temple marks the endpoint of the southern leg of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The main hall has a beautiful carved ceiling; the 'Fudo Waterfall' behind the temple is a sacred purification site. Pilgrims in white robes are common — observe respectfully. **Diving and snorkeling:** Ashizuri is one of the best dive sites in Shikoku. The warm Kuroshio Current brings tropical fish north — you can see butterflyfish, wrasse, and even occasional sea turtles. Ashizuri Diving Center offers guided dives (¥12,000 for 2 dives, English guides available). Best season: June–October. **Accommodation:** Stay at Ashizuri Thermae (足摺テルメ), an onsen resort on the clifftop. The outdoor rotenburo faces the ocean — soaking at sunset while watching the horizon turn orange is an experience. Kaiseki dinner includes katsuo and local spiny lobster. **Getting there solo:** Rental car is best (3 hours from Kochi). Alternatively, the direct highway bus from Kochi to Tosashimizu runs 3x daily (¥2,800 one-way, 2.5 hours). The cape is 20 min by local bus from Tosashimizu Station.
