Shimanto Sink Bridges — Drive Over, Not Under

**Safety notes:** Chinkabashi have no railings. Drive slowly (under 20 km/h). In rain or after heavy rain, bridges may be closed — never attempt to cross a flooded chinkabashi. Locals know this; tourists sometimes don't. Check water levels at the tourism office or online. **Best bridges for photography:** Iwama Chinkabashi (岩間沈下橋) is the most photogenic — set against a backdrop of green hills and river bends. Best light is early morning (7:00–9:00) or late afternoon (16:00–18:00). Sada Chinkabashi (佐田沈下橋) is the longest and most dramatic but harder to reach (30 min from Shimanto City). Katsuma Chinkabashi is the lowest — it floods frequently, creating dramatic photos of water rushing over the bridge. **Cycling route:** Rent an e-bike in Shimanto City and follow the 'Shimanto Cycling Road' — a 20km route that crosses 3–4 chinkabashi, passes riverside tea houses, and includes swimming spots. The route is mostly flat and well-marked. Maps available at rental shops. **Swimming near chinkabashi:** In summer, locals swim in the pools upstream from Iwama Bridge. The water is clean, cold, and deep enough to jump from the bridge (locals do this, but it's not officially encouraged). Bring water shoes — the riverbed is rocky. **Best season:** May–June (firefly season) and September–November (clear skies, low water). Avoid July–August (typhoon season, high water, bridge closures). Winter is quiet and beautiful but cold. **Cultural context:** Chinkabashi are unique to Kochi and a few other flood-prone regions. They represent a philosophy of working with nature rather than against it — build low, build simple, accept impermanence. This is deeply Japanese.
