Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum survives on maintenance and memory as much as on its original construction — that tension is part of the visit.

Sakamoto Ryoma (1836–1867) is one of the most celebrated figures in Japanese history — a low-ranking samurai from Tosa (Kochi) who became instrumental in overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate and opening Japan to the modern world. He brokered the alliance between the rival Satsuma and Choshu domains, founded Japan's first private navy, and drafted the 'Eight Proposals While Shipboard,' a visionary plan for a modern parliamentary government. He was assassinated at age 31, just before the Meiji Restoration he helped create.

The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum, perched on a cliff overlooking Katsurahama Beach, is dedicated to his life and legacy. The exhibits include Ryoma's letters (many written in his own hand), his belongings, replica swords, and dioramas depicting key moments of his life. The museum's architecture is striking — a modernist glass-and-steel structure that juts out over the Pacific, symbolizing Ryoma's forward-looking vision.

Opening hours

9:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily (last entry 4:30 PM). The cliff-edge observation terrace is accessible during museum hours. Audio guide and English pamphlet available at the entrance.

Closed: Closed on the 2nd and 4th Monday each month (if that Monday is a public holiday, the museum opens and closes the following Tuesday instead). Check the official website for the current month's closure.

Admission

¥700 adults, ¥400 high school students, ¥200 middle school students, free for elementary school and younger. Audio guide ¥200 additional. Included in Katsurahama area visit (no separate beach entry fee).

Best time to visit

Year-round (entirely indoors). Visit on the same day as Katsurahama Beach and the Ryoma statue for an efficient pairing. Rainy days are ideal — the museum is fully sheltered.

Historical notes & tips

**Museum highlights:** The second-floor exhibit displays Ryoma's actual letters, written in flowing cursive script. Even if you can't read Japanese, the physical presence of his handwriting is moving. The 'Ryoma's World' diorama room recreates 1860s Kyoto and Edo with miniature figures — it helps contextualize his travels and political maneuvers. **The Eight Proposals:** Ryoma's political vision, written aboard a ship in 1867, included abolishing the feudal system, establishing a parliament, and reforming the military. The proposals are displayed in translation — reading them, you realize how far ahead of his time he was. **Cliff-edge terrace:** The museum's outdoor observation deck extends over the cliff, offering a dramatic view of the Pacific. This is where Ryoma's statue (visible in the distance) looks out to sea. The deck is windy but beautiful. **Combine with Katsurahama Beach:** The museum and the Ryoma statue are part of the same visit. See the statue first, walk the beach, then visit the museum (60–90 min). The museum shop sells excellent Ryoma-themed souvenirs: postcards, bookmarks, and reproductions of his letters. **Ryoma in Kochi:** Ryoma is everywhere in Kochi — statues, murals, izakaya named after him, even the airport (Kochi Ryoma Airport). His birthday (January 3) is a local holiday with parades and festivals. For deeper Ryoma immersion, visit his birthplace monument and the Sakamoto Ryoma Hometown Museum in central Kochi. **Best time:** Year-round, but spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) have the best weather. The museum is indoors, so it's a good rainy-day option.
