You don't need to speak the language to order well at Yatai Yasube — you need to know when to go and what to expect.

Kochi has a street-stall drinking culture that has largely disappeared from the rest of Japan, and its emblem is gyoza. They are eaten standing or on stools, with beer, late.

The format is the point. Opening is seven in the evening and closing is three in the morning, four on Saturdays, and Sunday is the rest day — this is a place built entirely around what people do after everything else has shut. There are several gyoza stalls along the same stretch and a permanent branch inside Hirome Market for anyone who wants it at a civilised hour, but the stall is the original arrangement.

There is no lunchtime version at the stall — for daytime, use the Hirome Market branch. **Closed Sundays.** Which catches out weekend visitors who have spent Sunday at the morning market. **Order gyoza and beer and stop there.** The menu is short by design. This is a stall, not a restaurant. **There are other stalls on the same street.** Yamachan and others operate nearby and are generally quieter. The yatai culture, not this specific stall, is the thing to experience. **Standing or stools, and close quarters.** Expect to be beside strangers and to be spoken to. That is normal here and is a large part of why the format survives in Kochi and nowhere else.
