What sets Shirasaki Marine Park apart from other natural sites in Wakayama is how much depends on conditions outside anyone's control.

A headland of white limestone laid down more than two hundred and fifty million years ago, dropping straight into deep blue water on the Wakayama coast at Yura. The contrast is unlike anything else in Japan and the local marketing calls it the Aegean of Japan, which for once is a defensible comparison rather than an aspiration.

The rock is old enough to contain fusulinid fossils from the Permian, and the whole headland is a prefectural natural park. There is a roadside station with a viewing terrace, a campsite on the point that is one of the most striking in the country, and diving on the reefs offshore. It is free, the car park holds about two hundred, and it is around thirty minutes off the expressway between Osaka and Shirahama — which almost nobody does.

Yura, Hidaka District. Car recommended — from Hirogawa IC or Gobo-Minami IC on the Hanwa Expressway, or by taxi from JR Kii-Yura Station. Free to visit, with a free roadside station car park for around 200 vehicles. The site includes a roadside station with shops and food, a campsite with 87 parking spaces, and diving access.

Beyond the guidebook

**Walk out onto the white rock.** The viewing terrace at the roadside station is the easy view; the headland itself can be walked and is where the scale registers. **Look for fossils in the limestone.** The rock is Permian and contains fusulinids. They are visible in weathered surfaces if you know what you are looking for. **The campsite is the reason to stay.** Pitches on a white limestone headland above the sea, with 87 parking spaces and one vehicle per site. It books out in summer. **Free parking for two hundred.** Which is generous, and the roadside station has food and local produce including shirasu and akamoku. **Thirty minutes off the expressway.** Between Osaka and Shirahama, and almost nobody makes the detour. That is the whole opportunity.
