Getting the most out of Sasagawa Nagare is less about the destination than about timing the light right.

Sasagawa Nagare is an eleven-kilometre stretch of the northern Niigata coast where the Japan Sea has cut the rock into arches, stacks, caves and reefs and the water over the sandy bottom runs a clear pale green. It is designated both a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a National Natural Monument, which is an unusual double listing and reflects that the geology and the view were both judged worth protecting.

The road and the JR Uetsu Line both run along the shore, so the coast can be taken slowly by car with pull-ins at the named rocks, or from a train window. Sightseeing boats leave from Kuwagawa and work along the cliffs for about 40 minutes; black-tailed gulls follow the boats closely enough that feeding them from the deck is the standard entertainment. Sunsets here face open sea with nothing between the shore and the horizon.

Getting there in detail

Along Route 345 between Kuwagawa and Sasagawa, Murakami City, roughly by car north of Murakami Station. The boat pier is about a short walk from Kuwagawa Station on the JR Uetsu Line. Cruises run roughly mid-April to late November, about 40 minutes, ¥1,800 adults and ¥800 children aged 3 to 12, with departures from about 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Sailings are cancelled in strong wind or high seas — phone ahead on the day. Viewing the coast from the road and the beaches is free.

Local knowledge

**Phone before driving out for the boat.** Cancellation for wind and swell is common and the pier is from Murakami. The coast itself is worth the drive regardless. **Sunset is the reason to stay late.** The shore faces due west into open sea. Late afternoon light through the arches and stacks is what photographers come for, and it costs nothing. **The local salt is made on this coast.** Sasagawa Nagare seawater is boiled down at small works along the road and sold at the roadside stations. It is a genuinely different product from supermarket salt, and light to carry. **The train is an alternative to driving.** The Uetsu Line runs right along the water for this stretch and some services slow at the best sections. If you are not stopping at the rocks, the window is a fair substitute. **Swimming is possible but there are no lifeguards outside the marked beaches.** Currents around the reefs are stronger than the calm surface suggests.
