A visit to Niigata City Aquarium Marinepia is easy to underplan — bring more time, and less certainty about what you'll find, than you'd expect.

Marinepia Nihonkai is a coastal aquarium specializing in Sea of Japan marine life, featuring species rarely seen in other Japanese aquariums: giant Pacific octopus (up to 3m arm span), Steller sea lions, and schools of yellowtail amberjack (buri) in a 750-ton main tank. The aquarium's dolphin stadium sits directly on the coast with the actual Sea of Japan as backdrop — during performances, wild seabirds often fly through the frame, creating amusing interactions with the captive dolphins.

The aquarium also maintains a cold-water jellyfish gallery showcasing 15+ species from the Sea of Japan's deep waters, including the rarely-displayed Lion's Mane jellyfish (up to 2m diameter). The backlit tanks and slow-motion movement create a meditative atmosphere.

What to bring

**Buri feeding time:** The yellowtail amberjack feeding (14:30 daily) is the aquarium's most impressive spectacle — 100+ fish (each 60–80cm long) create a swirling vortex as divers disperse food. The buri are the same species served as sushi; seeing them alive in massive schools provides context for Niigata's fishing culture. **Jellyfish gallery low-light photography:** The jellyfish tanks are dimly lit (to enhance bioluminescence) and the jellies move slowly — use fast lens (f/1.8–2.8), high ISO (1600–3200), and shoot at 1/125 sec minimum to freeze motion. The backlit tanks create natural rim-lighting that outlines the jellyfish beautifully. **Coastal walk:** The aquarium sits on a coastal promenade extending 2km north to Niigata Port. The walk offers views of cargo ships, fishing boats, and Sado Island on clear days (40km offshore). Combine aquarium visit with sunset walk along the breakwater.
