Matsuyama Castle occupies the 132-meter summit of Mt. Katsuyama in central Matsuyama City, one of only twelve Japanese castles retaining an original tenshu (main keep) from the Edo period.

Visitors can reach the castle by ropeway, chairlift, or 20-minute hiking trail through cherry tree groves. The keep's top floor provides 360-degree views over Matsuyama City, the Seto Inland Sea, and on clear days, Shikoku's mountain ranges.

9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (until 5:30 PM in August, until 4:30 PM December–January). Ropeway/chairlift: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM.

Beyond the guidebook

**Chairlift vs. Ropeway:** Both climb the same route, but the open-air chairlift (¥520 RT) provides better photo opportunities and a more leisurely ascent (6 minutes vs. 3 minutes). The chairlift stops operating in strong wind — check conditions before buying tickets. The hiking trail is steep but manageable in 15–20 minutes for moderately fit visitors. **Castle architecture highlights:** The three-story keep appears four stories from outside due to hidden interior floors. Inside, exhibits display samurai armor, swords, and original defensive features including stone-drop chutes (ishiotoshi) and arrow slits. The steep wooden stairs between floors are intentionally uneven — designed to slow attackers. **Cherry blossom season:** The castle grounds hold 200+ cherry trees, making it one of Shikoku's top hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spots. Peak bloom (late March–early April) sees night illumination (18:00–21:00) when lanterns light the keep and surrounding trees. Visit early morning (7:00–9:00) during peak season to beat crowds. **Ninomaru Garden:** At the castle's base lies Ninomaru Historical Garden (二之丸史跡庭園), a 2013 reconstruction of the lord's private garden based on Edo-period drawings. Entry ¥200, separate from castle ticket. The minimalist garden design contrasts beautifully with the fortress architecture above.
