Getting the most out of Kushiro Shitsugen is less about the destination than about timing the light right.

Kushiro Shitsugen (釧路湿原) is Japan's largest wetland, covering 280 square kilometers of marshes, reed beds, and meandering rivers in eastern Hokkaido. The wetland is a designated Ramsar site and home to red-crowned cranes (tancho, タンチョウ) — sacred birds in Japanese culture symbolizing longevity and fidelity. In winter (December-February), the cranes gather at feeding stations, performing their famous courtship dances with leaping, bowing, and wing displays.

The wetland landscape is vast, flat, and wild — grasses stretch to the horizon, rivers wind in lazy loops, and wildlife (deer, foxes, eagles) appear unexpectedly. The Kushiro Shitsugen Observatory offers panoramic views, and wooden boardwalks (Onnenai and Hosooka) allow walking into the wetland without disturbing the ecosystem.

Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, Kushiro. Kushiro Shitsugen Observatory: a bus from JR Kushiro Station (¥600). Entry: ¥480. Crane viewing centers: Akan International Crane Center (¥470) and Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary (free, winter only). Best season: winter (Dec-Feb) for cranes.

What to bring

**Crane viewing strategy:** Winter (December-February) is the only time cranes gather in large numbers. Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary (鶴居・伊藤タンチョウサンクチュアリ, free entry) hosts 200-300 cranes at morning feeding (9:00) — the most reliable viewing. Arrive by 8:30 to secure spots along the viewing fence. Cranes perform courtship dances spontaneously (especially February). Bring binoculars and telephoto lens (300mm+). **Akan Crane Center:** Akan International Crane Center (阿寒国際ツルセンター, ¥470) has indoor observation rooms with heated space — more comfortable than Tsurui's outdoor viewing. The center feeds cranes at 9:00 and 14:00 (winter). Interpretive exhibits explain crane ecology and conservation (English signage available). **Wetland exploration:** The Onnenai boardwalk (温根内ビジターセンター, 3km loop, free) allows walking through wetland ecosystems — reed beds, open water, dwarf birch forest. Summer (June-August) sees wildflowers and nesting birds. Autumn (October) turns grasses golden. Winter is desolate but beautiful. Bring mosquito repellent (summer) and warm layers (always). **Canoe tours:** Several operators offer guided canoe tours on the Kushiro River, paddling through the wetland's heart. The river perspective is different from observation decks — low angle, intimate, silent. Tours run May-October (¥6,000-8,000, 2 hours).
