Furano Lavender Fields — Purple Summer Waves

Furano's lavender fields (富良野ラベンダー畑) transform the Tokachi mountain foothills into rolling purple waves each summer (July-early August). Farm Tomita (ファーム富田), the region's most famous lavender farm, cultivates seven different flower fields in stripes of purple lavender, pink phlox, white baby's breath, orange California poppies, and red salvia. The signature view from the hillside showcases the 'Rainbow Field' with Mt. Tokachi in the background.

Lavender cultivation began in Furano in the 1950s for perfume oil production. When synthetic oils replaced natural lavender, the fields nearly vanished until Farm Tomita's owner promoted them as a tourist attraction in the 1970s. Today, Furano's lavender is Japan's most iconic flower landscape, attracting 1 million visitors each summer.

Weekdays have 50% fewer crowds than weekends during peak. **Best viewing location:** The hillside 'Irodori Field' (彩りの畑) offers the panoramic rainbow stripes with mountain backdrop — this is the postcard shot. Arrive by 9:00 to photograph without crowds blocking views. The 'Traditional Lavender Field' (traditional lavender field) behind the main building has the densest lavender planting and strongest fragrance. **Lavender products:** The farm shop sells lavender soft-serve ice cream (¥300), lavender essential oil (¥1,500-3,000), dried lavender sachets (¥500), and lavender honey (¥1,200). The soft-serve is gimmicky but the essential oil is high-quality (food-grade). The perfume bottles (¥2,500) make elegant souvenirs. **Beyond Farm Tomita:** Hokuso no Oka Observatory Park (北星の丘展望公園, 15-min drive) has lavender fields with 1/10th the crowds and equally stunning views. Kanno Farm (菅野農場) offers tractor-cart rides through flower fields (¥500). Combine multiple farms for a full-day flower tour.
