Fukuoka has no shortage of temples and shrines, but Sakurai Futamigaura is the one worth setting aside real time for.

At Sakurai Beach in western Itoshima, two granite rocks rise from the shallow water 150 meters offshore — connected by a sacred rope (shimenawa) that must be replaced annually in a ceremony involving the entire local fishing community.

The scene at sunset is among the most photographed in Kyushu: the silhouetted twin rocks against the burning sky of the Genkai Sea, the rope a thin dark line between them. What makes Itoshima's version special — as opposed to the more famous Futamigaura at Ise — is the complete absence of tourist infrastructure. The access road is unmarked. The parking is a gravel field. The closest café is a surf shack. This is why the light, when it comes, feels genuinely discovered.

Sakurai Beach, Itoshima City. A drive from Chikuzen-Maebaru Station or from central Fukuoka. No bus service — rental car or taxi recommended. Free parking. Best visited 1 hour before sunset.

**Sunset timing:** The rocks align perfectly with the setting sun during summer solstice (mid-June) and winter solstice (late December). June 21 sunset at Sakurai is a pilgrimage for photographers — arrive 2 hours early to claim a spot. **Low-tide walk:** At low tide (check tidal charts) you can walk 50m out toward the rocks on exposed sandflat. The reflection of the rope in the wet sand adds a second compositional layer. **Shimenawa replacement ceremony:** Held every December — the date changes annually. A team of fishermen wades out to replace the ceremonial rope. Local news covers it; check Itoshima City tourism social media for the exact date. **Combine with:** Sakurai Shrine main hall (a short walk inland) has ancient camphor trees estimated at 500 years old. The forest behind the shrine is a cool, quiet escape in summer heat.
