Getting the most out of Gongendo Embankment is less about the destination than about timing the light right.

Gongendo is a flood embankment along the old course of the Naka river, about a kilometre of it planted with around a thousand Yoshino cherries, and beside it a field of rape blossom. The combination is the point: a tunnel of pale pink over a solid sheet of yellow, which is a colour pairing you do not get at the famous cherry sites and which is why this one is photographed as hard as it is.

The embankment was built and rebuilt against repeated flooding from the sixteenth century onward, and the local legend attached to it involves a woman and her child offered to the river to stop a breach. It is planted for four seasons rather than one: hydrangeas in June, red spider lilies at the autumn equinox, and daffodils in late winter, so the site is worth a detour outside April as well.

Uchi-Gomma, Satte City, in Gongendo Park. About a short walk from Satte Station on the Tobu Nikko Line, or a short taxi. Free and open at all hours. Parking is charged during the cherry festival, and the roads around the park congest badly in that period — public transport is recommended. The cherry festival runs from late March into mid-April, with dates announced each year by the city.

Beyond the guidebook

**Rape blossom is the reason to choose this over other cherry sites.** Pink above, yellow below. It only works while both are out, which is a narrower window than the cherries alone. **Go by train during the festival.** The approach roads jam and the car parks charge and fill. Satte Station is a twenty-minute walk. **Four seasons, not one.** Hydrangeas in June along the same embankment, red spider lilies around the autumn equinox, daffodils in February. All free and all uncrowded compared with April. **Walk the embankment top, not the path below.** The tunnel effect needs you to be up among the branches; from the field the trees read as an ordinary row. **It is a working flood defence.** The embankment exists because the Naka river broke repeatedly from the sixteenth century, and the legend of a sacrifice to close a breach is attached to the site rather than invented for it.
