Daisekirinzan rewards patience — the view most people describe isn't the one you get by rushing.

The limestone at the northern tip of Okinawa was laid down about two hundred and fifty million years ago and has weathered into a subtropical karst landscape — pinnacles, towers and slots of rock, with banyan and cycad growing out of them. There is nothing else like it in Japan, because Japan does not generally have karst in a subtropical climate.

The mountain is also Asumui, one of the oldest sacred sites in Ryukyuan belief, named in the creation accounts as a place the gods descended. It has been visited for that reason far longer than it has been a park. Four marked routes run through it, including one that is genuinely barrier-free, and it sits inside Yanbaru National Park. The operator rebranded the site as Asumui Hikes and prices moved with the rebrand, so confirm the current fee before travelling.

1241 Ginama, Kunigami, Kunigami District. Car required — from Kyoda IC up Route 58. Four walking routes: the giant rock and stone forest route, the Churaumi observation route, a barrier-free route and a subtropical natural forest route. Admission has changed with the site's rebranding as Asumui Hikes and is reported variously between around ¥1,200 and ¥2,500 for adults — confirm the current price on before travelling.

Local knowledge

**Confirm the price before you drive up.** The site was rebranded and restructured and quoted admission ranges widely between sources. It is ninety minutes from the expressway; ring first. **Pick a route on arrival.** Four are marked, from a short barrier-free loop to the full stone forest circuit. Doing all of them takes several hours; most visitors do one or two. **Treat it as a sacred site.** Asumui appears in Ryukyuan creation accounts and there are prayer places on the mountain. Signage indicates where not to go. **Combine with Cape Hedo.** The northernmost point of the main island is ten minutes further up the same road, and doing both is what a day in Kunigami is for. **Reception closes at four.** The site is open until half past five but you cannot start after four.
