Shiga's geography does a lot of the work at Azuchi Castle Ruins — the rest is knowing when to show up.

Oda Nobunaga built Azuchi between 1576 and 1579 on a hill over Lake Biwa and it stood for three years. The keep was seven storeys, gilded and painted inside by Kano Eitoku, and it was the first Japanese castle designed as a residence and a statement rather than a fortification — every keep built afterwards is downstream of it. It burned within days of Nobunaga's death in 1582 and was never rebuilt.

What remains is the mountain and the stonework: a broad stone stairway climbing straight up the ridge, the foundations of the retainers' mansions terraced along it, and at the top the bare stone platform the keep stood on, with the lake plain below. It is a Special Historic Site. The climb is about an hour return and there is nothing at the top but the outline, which is the point.

Directions

Azuchi-cho Shimotoyura, Omihachiman City. About a short walk from Azuchi Station on the JR Biwako Line. Admission ¥700 adults, ¥200 children. The return climb to the keep platform takes about 1 hour on a long stone stairway with no handrail.

What to bring

**It is a stone staircase up a mountain.** Long, steep, uneven and unrailed. This is the single thing to know before buying a ticket, and it is why the site is quiet. **Nothing was rebuilt and nothing will be.** The keep platform is bare stone. If you want a castle to look at, this is the wrong site; if you want to stand where the template for every Japanese castle keep was invented, this is the only one. **Sokenji is on the way up.** The temple Nobunaga built inside his own castle grounds, with its three-storey pagoda and gate surviving, part way along the stairway. **Go to the museum after, not before.** The archaeological museum has the reconstruction models and the excavation record, and it makes far more sense once you have walked the ground. **Nobunaga installed himself as an object of worship here.** Contemporary accounts have him requiring visitors to venerate a stone in the castle grounds on his birthday, which is either the arrogance or the political theatre the whole building was about. **Nobunaga no Yakata is nearby.** A full-scale reconstruction of the top two storeys of the keep, built for the 1992 Seville Expo and now housed near the museum.
