Awaji Puppet Theater (Ningyoza) is part of why Hyogo rewards travelers who read a little before they show up.

Awaji Ningyoza (淡路人形座) is a traditional puppet theater performing Awaji Ningyojoruri — a 500-year-old art form that predates and influenced Bunraku (Osaka's famous puppet theater). Three puppeteers manipulate each life-size puppet while a narrator (tayu) chants the story accompanied by shamisen music. The performances showcase dramatic tales from Japanese history and folklore with elaborate costumes and emotional puppet expressions.

Awaji is the birthplace of this puppet tradition, and Awaji Ningyoza is one of the few remaining professional troupes. Performances last 30–60 minutes with English audio guides available. The theater building itself is small (100 seats), providing intimate viewing where puppet manipulation techniques are clearly visible.
