A visit to Ushimado Olive Garden is easy to underplan — bring more time, and less certainty about what you'll find, than you'd expect.

Ushimado calls itself the Aegean of Japan, which sounds like tourist-board invention until you stand on the hill above the port and look south at a scatter of low islands in flat blue water under a sky that is clear more often than almost anywhere else in the country. The Seto Inland Sea coast here gets among the fewest rainy days in Japan, which is also why olives grow.

The garden was planted in 1942 and covers ten hectares with about 2,000 trees, run as a working farm by an olive company rather than as an attraction. It is free to walk in. A shop at the top sells the oil and cosmetics made from it, there is a café on the upper floor deliberately left without electric light, and the view from the terrace is the reason people drive out.

How to reach it

Getting there in detail

Ushimado-cho Ushimado 412-1, Setouchi City. By car from Oku Station on the JR Ako Line; buses run from Oku to Ushimado. Free entry. Craft sessions such as olive herbarium making at ¥500 and herb oil blending at ¥1,000 run about 15 minutes each. Dogs are allowed in the grounds but not inside the buildings.

Local knowledge

**Go for the view, not the olives.** Ten hectares of olive trees are pleasant; the reason to climb the hill is the Inland Sea from the terrace at the top. **Sunset and the café.** The upper-floor café has no electric lighting by choice, so late afternoon in there is the whole design working. It also means it is dark early in winter. **Harvest is October and November.** Trees are picked by hand and the pressing happens on site. Outside that the farm is quiet. **The islands below are reachable.** Maejima is a short ferry from Ushimado port and has almost nothing on it, which is the point. **Setouchi has the other Aegean cliché covered.** The coast road east towards Hinase and west towards Okayama is a genuinely good drive with almost no traffic outside summer weekends.
