A good onsen visit is mostly about timing, and Tsuboyu is no exception — when you go changes what you get.

Tsuboyu is a hut about the size of a garden shed over a rock pool in the streambed at Yunomine, and it is the only World Heritage site in the world you are allowed to bathe in. Pilgrims on the Kumano Kodo used it for yugori, the ritual purification before entering Kumano Hongu, and it was inscribed in 2004 as part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.

The water changes colour through the day — locally it is said to shift through seven — because of mineral precipitation, and it is hot enough that most people add cold. You take a numbered ticket at the public bathhouse desk, wait your turn, and get the whole thing to yourself for thirty minutes. The ¥800 also gets you into one of the two ordinary baths. Waits of one to two hours are normal at busy times.

How to reach the baths

Yunomine, Hongu-cho, Tanabe. By bus from Kii-Tanabe or Shingu to Yunomine Onsen. ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children under 12; the ticket also covers one entry to the village bathhouse's Ippan-yu or Kusuri-yu. Numbered tickets are issued at the bathhouse desk — waits of one to two hours are common at peak times. Free car park for around 46 vehicles.

Beyond the guidebook

**Take a numbered ticket first.** Tickets are issued at the public bathhouse desk in the village, not at the hut. Turning up at the pool and waiting there achieves nothing. **Thirty minutes, one party.** You have the bath entirely to yourself, which is why the queue exists. Waits of one to two hours are normal in the middle of the day. **It is very hot.** There is a cold tap. Use it — the source runs well above comfortable bathing temperature. **Your ticket includes another bath.** The same ¥800 covers one entry to the village's Ippan-yu or Kusuri-yu, which is worth taking while you wait. **Cook eggs in the stream.** The village has a public hot spring cooking pool where you can boil eggs and vegetables in the source water. Nets and eggs are sold nearby.
