Tokusa Onsen Iwaburo is one of the reasons Fukushima shows up on any list of Japan's onsen country.

Tokusa is called one of Aizu's hidden springs and the bath is exactly that: a rock pool under a simple roof, built into the bank of the Saikone river, with hot sulphurous water running through it and the river running past a couple of metres away. The spring is said to have been found around a thousand years ago and takes its name from the scouring rush that grew along the water.

It is a mixed bath, run by the hamlet rather than a company, and it costs ¥300 which you put into a red box at the entrance. There is a women's changing room; bathing wear can be rented for ¥300 from nearby inns. Nothing about it is designed for visitors, which is the reason people come a long way for it.

Miyazato, Minamiaizu, Minamiaizu District, on the bank of the Saikone river. Car recommended; the hamlet is deep in the mountains of southern Aizu. ¥300, placed in the red box at the entrance — there is no attendant. Mixed bathing, with a women's changing room; bathing wear can be rented for around ¥300 from nearby accommodation. Bring your own towel. Simple sulphur spring, delivered hot.

The bath is maintained by the hamlet and the honesty box is the entire system. **It is mixed bathing.** A women's changing room exists and bathing wear can be hired from the inns nearby for about the same as the entry fee. Deciding in advance is easier than deciding at the entrance. **It is metres from the river.** Which means it can be affected by high water, and in heavy rain or snowmelt it may be unusable. Ring an inn locally before making a long drive. **Bring a towel and expect nothing else.** No soap, no lockers, no attendant, no vending machine. That is not neglect — it is what a hamlet bath is. **Snow makes the drive serious.** Southern Aizu is deep-snow country and this is a minor road. Winter access needs proper tyres and a check on conditions.
