Ehime has plenty of scenery; Omogo Gorge is the kind that's worth planning a whole day around.

Omogo is the gorge at the foot of Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest mountain in western Japan, cut into granite so that the riverbed is pale rock and the water over it reads green. It is a national Place of Scenic Beauty and sits inside the Ishizuchi Quasi-National Park at the entrance to the Ishizuchi Skyline.

Two walking routes leave the car park. The main-stream route runs past Goshiki-gahara, Momiji-gahara, Kumafuchi and Tora-ga-taki and takes about two hours there and back; the Teppo-gawa route follows a quieter tributary past a campsite. The full set of sights takes half a day. The water is cold and clear enough that people swim in it in August, and the gorge is one of the main approaches to Ishizuchi for climbers.

Wakayama, Kumakogen, Kamiukena District, inside the Ishizuchi Quasi-National Park at the entrance to the Ishizuchi Skyline. Car recommended. Free to visit, with a free car park for around 50 vehicles. The main-stream walking route takes about 2 hours return; the Teppo-gawa route follows a tributary past a campsite. Allow half a day to see the gorge properly.

Beyond the guidebook

**Two routes from one car park.** The main stream has the named features — Goshiki-gahara, Kumafuchi, Tora-ga-taki — and takes about two hours return. The Teppo-gawa route is quieter and shorter. **The rock is why the water is green.** Pale granite riverbed under clear water. It is at its strongest in bright conditions rather than overcast. **August for swimming.** The pools are cold and clear and people do swim. The gorge is several degrees cooler than the lowland. **It is the Ishizuchi approach.** The Omogo route up the highest mountain in western Japan starts here, and the Ishizuchi Skyline climbs from the same junction. **Half a day, not an hour.** The two-hour return on the main route is the minimum for seeing what the gorge has.
