Every prefecture has a site locals point to first; in Fukuoka, Kokura Castle is usually it.

Kokura Castle (1602) stands at the mouth of the Murasaki River where it meets the Kanmon Strait, commanding views of both Shimonoseki and the industrial port that defines modern Kitakyushu. The reconstructed donjon (1959) rises five stories and contains a museum of local history. What distinguishes Kokura is the castle garden: a stroll garden surrounding the inner moat that has been replanted with the original plant palette specified in a 1688 document, making it an unusually historically grounded garden restoration.

**Castle garden at dawn:** The castle grounds before 8:00 belong entirely to dog-walkers and serious photographers. **Ninja performance:** Kokura Castle's resident ninja performance (Shinobi Kagura, weekends only, 11:00 and 14:00) is primarily aimed at children but involves genuine martial arts practitioners. The post-performance Q&A with the performers is unexpectedly educational.
