Katori Shrine — Ancient Shrine in Cedar Forest

**Early morning visit:** The shrine opens informally at dawn (6:00am in summer) when the main gates are unlocked. Visiting before 8:00am allows solitude in the forest — the morning mist rising through the cedars creates an ethereal atmosphere. Deer occasionally appear near the northern forest trails. **Treasure hall:** The small museum displays ancient swords (tachi and katana) designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, some dating to the Heian period (794–1185). The Kaijin-maru-Kuniyuki tachi, forged in the 1200s, is considered one of Japan's finest surviving swords. **Forest trail circuit:** Behind the main shrine, a 30-minute loop trail circles through old-growth cedar forest. The trail passes smaller sub-shrines, a sacred spring (the water is drinkable), and the 'couple cedars' — two trees whose trunks have fused, considered a symbol of marital harmony. **Martial arts demonstrations:** On major festival days (April 14, November 3), shrine priests perform ceremonial sword kata using replica ancient swords. The movements are slow, precise, and mesmerizing — a window into pre-modern martial traditions.
