Hakata Gion Machiya Folk Museum

Hakata Gion Machiya Folk Museum is part of why Fukuoka rewards travelers who read a little before they show up.

The Hakata Machiya Folk Museum occupies three restored machiya (merchant townhouses) from the early 20th century in the historic Gion district. The buildings were relocated here and meticulously reconstructed with their original materials — exposed timber frames, clay walls, sliding fusuma panels — to demonstrate how Hakata's merchant class lived and worked a century ago. The museum's specialty is the Hakata Orimono (woven textile) tradition: the silk weaving technique that produces Hakata ori fabric, still used in the finest kimono sashes, is demonstrated by resident weavers on restored handlooms.
