The appeal of Goshogake Onsen isn't the water alone — it's everything built up around the habit of soaking in it.

Goshogake sits at about a thousand metres on the western flank of Hachimantai in an area of active geothermal ground, and its bathhouse has seven different baths using the same source in different ways — a mud bath, a box steam bath where you sit with your head out, a bubbling volcanic bath, a steam sauna, a pounding bath and an outdoor pool.

The other half is the ondoru. Guests lie on heated floors in a partitioned communal room, a Korean-derived cure practice that has been used here for generations for chronic conditions, and long stays are still the main business. Outside the front door a nature trail loops through the geothermal field past mud volcanoes, steam vents and boiling pools — a landscape that looks like a small-scale Yellowstone and is walkable from mid-June to late October.

Hachimantai, Kazuno, in the Hachimantai mountains. Car recommended; the access road is affected by snow. Day bathing 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM, ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children. Closed Tuesdays, and Tuesdays to Thursdays in winter. The Goshogake nature trail through the geothermal field is walkable from around mid-June to late October. Overnight guests may use the ondoru heated-floor rooms 4:00 PM – 9:30 PM for up to two hours at no extra charge.

What locals know

**Try the box steam bath.** You sit inside a wooden box with your head out while steam fills it. It is the signature of this bathhouse and unlike anything in an ordinary onsen. **Day bathing is four and a half hours.** Half past ten to three, and it closes Tuesdays — and Tuesday through Thursday in winter, which catches people badly. **Walk the nature trail.** Mud volcanoes, steam vents and boiling pools on a loop from the front door, mid-June to late October. It is the reason to combine the bath with daylight. **The ondoru is for guests.** Heated-floor cure rooms, four to half past nine, up to two hours, included in a stay. Day visitors do not get it. **It is a cure resort.** Long stays for chronic conditions are the main business and the atmosphere reflects that. It is quiet and it is not a resort hotel.
