Echigo-Yuzawa is the onsen town that inspired Yasunari Kawabata's Nobel Prize-winning novel 'Snow Country' (雪国, 1948) — the opening line 'The train came out of the long tunnel into the snow country' refers to the moment the train emerges from the Shimizu Tunnel into Yuzawa's deep-snow basin.
